A Coffee Break with Food Blogger Stella Yu
Eat. Tweet. Repeat.
That’s the typical night out for Toronto-based food blogger Stella Yu, of Food Junkie Chronicles . In any given week, Stella will attend and review multiple restaurant openings, judge a dish duel , host a burger crawl or act as a roving food reporter for charity events such as Toronto Taste . We caught up with Stella in between bites to learn more about her coffee routine.
How do you like your coffee?
I’ll have an Americano almost every single day with a shot of white mocha syrup. It’s the first thing I drink in the morning on my way to work. When I don’t have coffee in the morning I’m a bit cranky and for sure sleepy.
Every once in a while, I’ll have an iced coffee as an afternoon treat.
After dinner, I sometimes have a cappuccino, which is my second go-to coffee drink. I also enjoy a good spiked coffee with a bit of Baileys. I’ll often have that instead of a dessert.
When did you start to develop your taste for coffee?
I’ve always liked the smell of coffee, but I began to drink it consistently when I started working. There were so many cafés around my office that my co-workers and I would often go for coffee breaks together. I found that I naturally just started drinking and liking coffee after that.
How did you get into food blogging?
It was never my intention to write about food or to even start a food blog. It started a few years ago when I was uploading A LOT of food pictures on Facebook. My friends were like, “Why don’t you just start a blog?” just to archive all my pictures there. It just started like that. At first it was only for friends and for my reference, but afterwards it just grew into something more.
What is it about food that draws you to that topic?
Personally, eating good food just makes me happy! I think food is interesting because everyone can relate to it and it’s universal, but at the same time everyone can have a different opinion about it. That’s why I find it fascinating and interesting.
Where is your dream place to sit and enjoy a coffee?
San Francisco. It’s a scenic city with good food. I can picture myself enjoying a cup of coffee and just being serene and relaxed.
What are your favourite foodie treats to pair with a coffee?
Probably something savoury like a muffin that would contrast with the flavour of the coffee. I’m not a cupcake person, so nothing too super-sweet.
