Our Favourite Autumn Activity
As the autumn leaves fall we sometimes avoid doing outdoor activities – nothing is quite like summer in Canada, so it’s often hard to adjust to the cooler temperatures of autumn and winter. There are great ways to keep warm over the cooler months, and one of them is to share some of the warmer moments with the family!
A WALK ON THE FALL SIDE
As a kid, there was one fall activity that I really always enjoyed. Despite both my parents being very busy, they would find time to go on these beautiful autumn walks. It would be a great family event where we would walk by a mountain, a lake, or just around our neighborhood. But no matter where it was, it was about whom I was with (and the happiness I felt) that made it so memorable. As we get older, it becomes harder to find time to do these things, so I think it’s important to do them when the time is there.
No walk was complete without a snack of some sort. We would find a nice spot to picnic and enjoy a few treats from home. My mom would often pack mini tuna sandwiches, a few fruits, some granola bars and juice. We would look out for foxes and rare looking birds as we ate, it was the advantage of growing up in the suburbs and around a lot of parks.
On the walk back, we would pick up leaves with my sisters. Naturally as we were always competitive we would have my parents judge our leaves for the best ones. We would collect them all, holding them as a bouquet of flowers by the stem. The autumn leaves would be every color imaginable.
But despite all the fun, it was what waited for us at home that was the best. We would rush to get out of our coats and run into the kitchen. It was the moment where we enjoyed a nice cup of hot chocolate as my parents enjoyed their coffee.
We are lucky to have such beautiful seasons in Canada, and taking the opportunity to savour the season with your family is a must. Just don’t forget your special treat throughout or after – a nice, fresh cup of coffee!
