My favourite Van Houtte collection
Chocolatier and Van Houtte ambassador Wendy Boys encourages making responsible choices and truly values every action that can be done in order to preserve the planet. It was no surprise that she fell in love with our Fair Trade Organic collection! She tells us why.
Since moving to Vancouver in 2002, my world, particularly in the food and restaurant industry , became filled with buzzwords, like local, organic, sustainable and fair trade. At first, I wasn’t sure how these words would or could affect what I purchased.
Now, after 10 years of living on the West Coast, I have come to understand the incredible value of these words as tools to help guide consumers to make responsible choices, and in turn, help build a better future for the planet and a better life for us. These are words that I now look for when making purchases for my home and my business.
When it comes to buying and supporting local, as a small business owner in Vancouver, I know first-hand the value in supporting local businesses and using local products. As a proud Canadian, I also know how important it is to support Canadian products and producers.
Organic means food or ingredients that are grown without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and are not genetically modified. This is important to me personally because run offs are changing our ecosystem. Growing up, we went to the lake in the summer. Over time, this lake became more andmore sludgy. My dad explained that the green slime that was becoming a thicker layerevery summer was because of fertilizer run offs from the surrounding farmer’s fields were polluting the lake. At the time, I just remember thinking how gross it was and I stopped waterskiing. As an adult, I can see now it was a real tragedy.
Sustainability is a constant for me, especially after the recent economic recession. I am more careful and really think about sustainability, particularly when I consider the big picture and the long-term effects of my choices. With my business, my buying power has increased beyond personal consumption so I feel my choices are making an impact and I prefer to make a positive one.
For me, fair trade is the most important tool guiding my purchasing practices. Coffee harvesting is incredibly labour intensive, and I feel better knowing that the plantation owners and workers are making a “fair trade” in selling their beans to the roasters.
I am thrilled to have found a coffee that suits my flavour preferences that I can drink and know that my values are being upheld. My coffee of choice is the Van houtte Amazonia Fair Trade Organic . It is a Velvety & Woodsy blend. As a long time Canadian company with sustainable and long-term goals, I appreciate and enjoy both the quality and the values behind the Van Houtte Fair Trade Organic coffees – which are delicious and smooth!
