Sweet Coffee Pairings In Calgary
A perfect cup of coffee just beckons for a sweet pairing. Our recent Van Houtte Facebook page poll found that most people prefer something sweet vs. something savoury to pair with coffee. Van Houtte Ambassador, Kelly Doody shares her favourite dessert pairings in Calgary.
The way I see it, the perfect coffee is not quite complete until it’s paired with a delicious dessert. Like matching the right wine with a meal, I scoured the city of Calgary to uncover my favourite coffee and sweet treat combinations.
The latte-pastry love affair
When it comes to a good latte, the perfect complimentary treats here are the authentic French pastries from Pascal’s Patisserie . My preferred doughy delight being the white chocolate berry scone… it’s coffee-pastry-pairing perfection.
Espresso-meets-gelato amore
Given its short stature, Italian roots and big bold taste, one can’t argue the merits of an authentic gelato or sorbet; my favourite place in town to find one being the new Sunterra Market in the Keynote tower. The market alone is a sight to see, but hidden in the back is a rather unbelievable gelato bar, with a rainbow of icy blends just waiting to be tried. Sit down on the café’s rooftop patio with a hazelnut variety and a quick cup of espresso, and you’ll be back on the nearby Bow River bike path before you know it.
Iced coffee a la mode
Nothing says summer like patio season in Calgary. But a few weeks long and often interrupted by a fierce afternoon hailstorm, when the mercury does hit 30 degrees and your sweet tooth beckons, you can whip up the most delicious espresso float with hot espresso poured over a generous scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. It’s a two-in-one coffee-dessert dream. And who wants to blend coffee with ice when you can blend it with ice cream?
Have your chocolate cake and Americano too
Long, dark and full of intense coffee flavour, there’s no better match for an aromatic Americano than a good dose of rich chocolate cake. Mastering Calgary’s dessert scene for more than 25 years, The Chocolate Bar Dessert Café on 17 Ave. S.W. has a truly amazing cake menu. My go-to favourites being the Chocolate Sin Cake, the Black Forest Cake or the Tiramisu Torte, all of which were made for an Americano marriage.
