My 3 Rules to a Perfect Cup
Coffee is delicious, easy to come by and make. It is an essential part of most people’s day. I take my coffee very seriously. When it comes to brewing a cup of coffee, I follow 3 simple rules and it makes all the difference. Trust me, I know coffee.
1. Always use filtered water
With coffee being mostly water, using the right water is essential to its flavour. Using fresh and cold water is always best. Cold, fresh water has more oxygen than boiled or hot water and it helps to extract the flavours and aromas of the coffee. Tap water that contains chlorine and other chemicals will change the taste of the coffee. On the other end, distilled or demineralized water will also alter the taste of coffee, brewing a very flat cup. So using filtered water is ideal.
2. Quantity
Generally speaking, a lot of people use less coffee than they should per quantity of water. I sometimes joke around and ask whoever is making the coffee to add another spoon of coffee to the filter. A good rule is to always use 2 tablespoons of coffee per cup of water (6 oz or 175 ml)
3. Clean Machine
Just like you would clean your coffee mug, cleaning your coffee machine is key! Some of the coffee residue left over might build up over time in your machine. The oils that stay behind can alter your cup of coffee, so clean that machine!
